It is absolutely one of my favorite times of the year. Men’s and women’s college basketball teams put it all on the line for a 64 team showdown divided into 4 regions across the country to see which team respectively will be crowned “National Champions”! I love the tourney for many reasons. I respect the fact that there is still amateur athletes playing a team sport for more than money, prestige, or a shoe contract. I never played in the World Series of NCAA softball, but I came close enough to know what it tastes like. What a feeling to be playing for the “best of the best” in your sport. To have a shot at going all the way. I think the fact that the Gonzaga’s, Vermont’s, and Villanova’s of college basketball have a shot at winning it all as much as Duke, UNC, or Kansas. The parody that exists in the college basketball championship is unparalleled. Every year a #2 or #3 seed gets knocked out in the first round by a team who the experts say probably didn’t deserve to be there. The fact is they are there and anybody can be beaten on any given night, (unfortuantely we as Pats fans know this lesson all too well).

I guarantee you if you tune in to the conference tournaments coming up this weekend or catch any of the games next Thursday or Friday you will not be disappointed. You will see buzzer beaters, double and triple overtime games, and teams leaving it all on the court for one last time. Seniors, men and women crying at the realization that he or she is actually playing in their last collegiate game. It will tear your heart out one minute and leave you screaming for more the next. Even if you don’t like basketball, the emotion that these young men and women play with and leave on the court will inspire you. Soon you’ll be looking into words like “bracketology” and “cinderella story” and you’ll wonder how did I ever miss out on this wonderful whirlwind of the most competitive, intense 3 weeks of basketball you will ever experience!!

Mal gettin’ her “tough” look on…

Mal gettin’ her “tough” look on…

Get’s it all from her aunt!

Get’s it all from her aunt!

Lori and I at Pensacola Beach. I decided to make a list (hopefully not too exhaustive) of my favorite sounds. Here goes…

• Metal softball spikes on cement
• Waves crashing on beach
• A child’s hearty laugh
• Thunder, followed by raindrops on the window sill
• A new born puppy’s cry for mom
• The unique silence of snow falling in the woods (it’s a sound believe me)
• Snowboard slicing across the snow
• Burning firewood crackling
• Crack of a bat striking a ball
• Piano playing softly
• Swish of basketball net as ball goes threw
• Horse’s hooves walking on dirt
• Fall leaves rustling and crunching underfoot

Like I said this is just some of the top sounds that came to my mind. Coming soon: Favorite smells of course… I guess I could title this “And that’s the way I hear it” I know bad joke, but hey it’s my blog so hang in there more to come where that came from.

Aren’t they soooo cute!!!

Aren’t they soooo cute!!!

"When the heart speaks, take good notes.”

However, I’d like to share one of my favorites that I think is so adorable and loveable that if I had the chance I’d take one home and hand raise it myself. (That is if I lived on a farm or ranch and had the space. My little 3 room apartment won’t quite be the “drey”, a squirrel’s home, I would hope for.)
Baby squirrels although not meant to be a domestic creature are incredibly cute and entertaining to watch. “Baby squirrels are born in the spring, without fur. They’re blind, and weigh in at one or two ounces each. There are usually four in a liter. The mother will keep the young in the nest and nurse them until they’re ready to venture out of the nest, on their own. This is usually in eight to ten weeks. You may see a mother squirrel move her babies, she will carry them by mouth, one at a time.”
I remember a time when I was in college. I would sit outside on the steps of the Pentacrest (set of 5 buildings at University of Iowa) waiting to go to class. I’d sit out there and watch the squirrels fearlessly make their way from person to person looking for a hand out. One day I happened to have a package of Pop Tarts in my back pack, lunch of champions for a struggling student. I took out the Pop Tarts and held out a little piece. Sure enough here comes a little squirrel, hesitantly it crept up near me and grabbed the morsel from my hand. Now, many people would have said, “Are you crazy? That thing could have had rabies or some kind of disease.” I have never been one to shy away from any mammal of any kind and this little critter was no different.
I will leave you with a bit of advice… Most baby animals (accept for snakes and do they really count?) are adorable and we would all love to take them home. If an animal is sick or injured, of course, you could pick it up and either nurse it back to health or take it to your local vet. However, too many times I hear stories on the news of people trying to take in wild animals and raise them on their own. Most of the time either the animal dies or ends up injuring someone in the household. They are called “wild” animals for a reason. So go ahead and stare, take pictures, laugh at, and appreciate squirrels and all other animals for all their cute and cuddly ways. Just from a distance okay.
This blog is dedicated to my good friend “Moe”. Thanks for seeing the beauty in all animals!!! :-)

The cutest dog in the world.

The cutest dog in the world.

Regarding the shooting of the spy satellite by the U.S....

First, of course they are using this as a chance to test their anti-satellite missile system. Any country would use this as an opportunity to do that. You would be stupid not to. We have a legitimate reason to blow this satellite up so at the same time if you are already spending 10 million dollars lets test out some of out defense weapons—duh…

Secondly, It is scary how much I believe our country lies to us or conveniently leaves out information. Hydrazine, if it would have entered our atmosphere intact in it’s shell or casing whatever it is in, if that would have hit the ground and exploded first it would have been a MAJOR explosion killing people depending on where it hit, second if the fuel was dispersed as a gas and became an aerosol, hundreds of thousands of people injesting that could have died. Hydrazine is a VERY poisonous fuel apparently from what I have read. 1,000 pounds under pressure of any chemical that can go from a liquid to a gas would spread a lot further than 2 football fields, especially if there was any wind. That was such a false statement/ cautious statement… Aperson reads that and thinks, “oh, just 2 football fields, that’s not bad, my chances are pretty good with that small of a number.” does the government really think the majority of us are that stupid?

Now for my questions. How do we really know we hit it and blew it up? Why does a satellite that is supposed to be functioning in outerspace, why does it still have 1,000 pounds of fuel intact? What is the need? I mean I don’t know that much about satellite, but don’t we position it and then it stays in orbit without a need for fuel? Lastly, the scary reality is all the books I read about biological warfare, I fear some of those stories will become realities in our lifetime. I hope not, but I hope our government continues to test these defense missiles. It may be one of the only ways to survive an attack of germ warfare from outerspace. And if anybody doesn’t think there are countries (including us) with the capacity to strike from outerspace then I think they are being very naive.
